Less entertaining are the legal blow by blows of his court case and all of its machinations through the American legal system. The best parts are the details of how Flood grew up in Oakland in a time when baseball players came out of the city in droves as well as his minor league days in the Jim Crow Era South. Though not a great book, or even the book that Curt Flood may have deserved, "A Well-Paid Slave" is important American history well worth reading. I now believe i have a complete understanding of the case and why it failed. ![]() In 1975 And Messersmith and Dave Mc Nally played out their options with their teams and became eligible for free agency as did Catfish hunter and a few others spawning the first multimillion dollar contracts in baseball. Flood lost everything but he did it for what he through was for the greater good. Flood at that time decided to risk his career and fight baseball's antitrust act. Author talks about why it failed and the people that failed Floodįlood believed that he had the right to reject being traded, After twelve years of service with the St Louis Cardinals the Cardinals traded Flood to the Phillies. When Snyder talks about Flood it's not always glowing, Snyder does talk about the alcoholism and the negative aspects of Floods personality. Flood was a survivor and a fighter, something which followed him throughout his life. Flood had a lot of support from his family and from his coaches who kept him out of trouble for the most part.
